The pressure to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) is escalating, with organizations worldwide scrambling to integrate AI into their operations. In Canada, however, the latest AI Readiness Index reveals a troubling trend—AI readiness is declining, with only 7% of organizations fully prepared to deploy AI technologies, down from 9% last year. Despite the enthusiasm and growing urgency among 96% of Canadian businesses to leverage AI, significant barriers persist.

One of the most critical challenges is infrastructure readiness. From the shortage of essential GPUs for large-scale computations to insufficient cybersecurity measures like continuous monitoring and end-to-end encryption, Canadian organizations face hurdles that stifle progress. Without the foundational technologies required for AI, such as optimized data centers and robust network performance, even the most innovative AI strategies risk falling flat.

Talent gaps exacerbate these issues. While organizations recognize the transformative potential of AI, only 54% feel they have access to the skilled workforce needed to execute their vision. This scarcity of expertise affects not only AI deployment but also the ability to manage and protect sensitive data, a core requirement for any successful AI initiative.

Interestingly, strategy remains a bright spot for Canada. The Index highlights that 92% of Canadian businesses have an AI strategy in place or under development, outpacing the global average of 61%. Investments are also on the rise, with 45% of companies allocating up to 30% of their IT budgets to AI projects. This figure is expected to more than double over the next five years as organizations target areas like cybersecurity, infrastructure, and customer experience.

While these strides are promising, the path forward requires organizations to focus on breaking down silos and addressing gaps in infrastructure and talent. Real progress depends on fostering cross-functional collaboration and building systems that are scalable, secure, and flexible enough to accommodate evolving AI needs.

Directpath Global Technologies (DGT) understands the complexities of achieving AI readiness. With expertise in managed security services and advanced AI solutions, DGT partners with organizations to enhance their cybersecurity infrastructure and streamline operations. Services like Vulnerability Risk Management as a Service (VRMaaS), Virtual CISO (vCISO), and AI-driven tailored solutions can help bridge gaps in readiness, ensuring businesses stay resilient and competitive.

The time to act is now. As AI reshapes industries and raises the bar for operational excellence, businesses must prioritize foundational improvements. Those that adapt with agility and foresight will not only harness the power of AI but also redefine what it means to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
