In response to the rapidly-evolving landscape of cyber threats, the Philippines has taken a decisive step towards fortifying its national security. The military has announced that cyber defence will now be treated as a "common fixture" in future military exercises, recognizing the critical role it plays in modern warfare. This strategic move aligns with Manila's increased investment in cybersecurity to safeguard against emerging cyber threats.
A Non-Physical Domain with Physical Impact
Colonel Michael Logico, spokesperson for the military, emphasized the significance of cyber defence during the closing ceremony of Exercise Ajex Dagitpa. He highlighted that while discussions often revolve around physical domains such as ground and maritime, the non-physical domains, including cyberspace and information subsystems, are equally crucial. Logico underscored that these non-physical domains have tangible effects on physical domains, emphasizing the interconnected nature of modern warfare.
A New Cyber Command
In line with this commitment to cyber defense, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. announced the launch of a new cyber command. This initiative aims to ensure the nation's safety from malicious actors operating in cyberspace. The cyber command will integrate information technology experts and implement a less strict recruitment process to attract a diverse pool of recruits with varying expertise.
Countering Disinformation and Addressing Information Threats
Acknowledging the transnational nature of cyber threats, the Philippines has forged a partnership with Denmark. The collaboration focuses on countering disinformation and proactively addressing threats in the information ecosystem. By sharing expertise and resources, the nations aim to enhance their collective resilience against cyber threats that extend beyond national borders.
A Catalyst for Cybersecurity Investment
The move to prioritize cyber defence comes in the wake of increased cyber attacks on Philippine infrastructure. In October, the websites of the House of Representatives and the Senate faced apparent cyber attacks, signalling the urgency for robust cybersecurity measures.
As the Philippines takes strides to modernize its cyber capabilities and fortify its defences, the integration of cyber defence in military exercises represents a forward-thinking approach to national security. By recognizing the interconnectedness of physical and non-physical domains, the Philippines aims to create a resilient defence against evolving cyber threats.
