Canadian retailers are grappling with an escalating wave of credit card scams, causing significant financial strain, especially for small businesses. Over the past three years, fraudulent activities involving stolen credit card information have continued to erode retailers' bottom lines, with experts warning of the increasing sophistication of these scams.
In Nova Scotia, scammers often target small businesses, purchasing high-value items like tires, furniture, generators, and ATVs. According to Const. Mitch Thompson of the Nova Scotia RCMP, these fraudsters use stolen credit card details to place large orders online or over the phone. Once transactions are approved, third-party transport services are arranged to pick up and deliver the items out of province, making it nearly impossible for authorities to track the stolen goods.
The Retail Council of Canada has also highlighted the burden of these scams, explaining that merchants bear the financial responsibility when credit card fraud occurs. “It’s the retailer that’s on the hook when there’s fraud done through the use of credit cards,” noted Jim Cormier, director of the Atlantic division Retail Council of Canada. This places small businesses in a particularly vulnerable position, as they often lack the resources to recover from such losses.
Further complicating matters is the link between these scams and organized crime. Fraudsters employ fake identities, emails, and addresses, making detection and prosecution extremely challenging. Despite an increase in cases, arrests remain scarce due to the sophisticated nature of these operations.
