Ronald Gustilo, national campaigner for Digital Pinoys, is leading the call for urgent action from both the government and the private sector.
Gustilo emphasized that these incidents are not isolated but rather symptomatic of a broader and worsening cybersecurity crisis in the country. "The government should not treat the recent incidents as mere isolated cases but should look at the bigger picture and address the fact that we are now experiencing a crisis on cybersecurity. This should be given urgent and utmost attention, as the effects of these leaks will be grave," Gustilo said.
The recent breaches have significant repercussions, including the risk of identity theft, fraud, and financial transactions carried out by criminals using stolen personal information. These breaches not only endanger individual privacy but also undermine public trust in digital platforms and institutions.
Gustilo also underscored the necessity for stringent penalties against institutions compromised by data breaches. "As hacking incidents have been much more persistent recently, the government should penalize agencies and private institutions affected by data compromise," he stated.
