Urgent: Canadian Executives Increasingly Vulnerable to Cyberattacks—Time to Act

A recent report by GetApp reveals a concerning trend: senior executives in Canada are becoming primary targets for cybercriminals. With 65% of Canadian senior executives experiencing at least one cyberattack in the past 18 months, the situation is becoming critical. Yet, despite their elevated risk, 43% of these leaders have not received additional cybersecurity training. Even more alarming is that 30% believe they don't need the training at all.

This dangerous mindset exposes organizations to significant risks. Senior executives typically have access to vast amounts of sensitive data and hold privileged access to critical systems, making them prime targets for attackers. The report emphasizes that time pressures often cause these leaders to sidestep essential cybersecurity training, leaving companies vulnerable to corporate identity theft and other malicious attacks.

The methods used to target these executives are also evolving. The most common forms of attack include malware (50%) and phishing (47%), followed by ransomware (36%) and password attacks (32%). While AI-driven deepfakes and biometric security breaches are growing concerns globally, deepfake attacks are currently less prevalent in Canada (14%) compared to the global average of 21%. However, the rising popularity of AI tools means that these attacks are likely to increase in the near future.

One of the most troubling insights from the report is that many attacks against senior executives aren't necessarily sophisticated. In fact, a major issue is that Canadian executives are more likely (45%) than their global counterparts (42%) to download files from untrusted sources, a basic yet avoidable mistake that can have severe consequences. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of proper security training, with many executives believing their knowledge is sufficient, or simply not having the time to commit to further education.

This complacency, combined with a lack of time and resources, leaves companies wide open to attack. With cyber threats growing more advanced, businesses can no longer afford to rely on outdated or incomplete cybersecurity practices. Organizations must take steps to ensure that their senior leaders are not only aware of these risks but are adequately prepared to defend against them.
